The contractual workers of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) under the banner of MeECL Progressive Workers’ Union (MePWU) has threatened to to take-out a protest march to Main Secretariat on October 17, if the state government fails to regularize their services.
Addressing the mediapersons on Monday, the president of MePWU – Mantiphrang Lyngdoh Kiri asserted that “If the state government continues to be obstinate about responding to our demand, we will be forced to hold a protest march on October 17 from the MeECL office in Lumjingshai to the Main Secretariat.”
He said that the union has chosen to keep holding daily one-hour protests in front of the MePDCL office, which is located next to the Main Secretariat. This dharna will continue throughout the lunch hour from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM till October 14.
According to Mantiphrang, the union has been demanding the rapid regularization of the services, provided to the contractual employees and the release of pending arrears. However, the government has not responded favourably till today.
