Guwahati, August 02, 2023: The Assam government’s decision to suspend Biswajit Goswami, the CEO of Dhubri Zilla Parishad, over corruption charges has triggered widespread resentment and agitation among the people of Dhubri district.
Goswami was arrested by the Assam Crime Branch (ACB) on July 21, 2023, for allegedly taking bribes through his staff. The ACB also recovered over Rs 2 crore in cash and several documents related to bank accounts and property from his residence and office.
The Governor of Assam suspended Goswami from service with immediate effect from the date of arrest until further orders. However, the suspension order also stated that Goswami could return to his post if he is released from judicial custody, subject to review if necessary.
This clause has angered the locals and various groups in Dhubri district, who have been staging protest rallies and demonstrations, demanding more severe actions against Goswami and his accomplices. They have also submitted memorandums to the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police in Dhubri, seeking a thorough investigation into the case.
The protesters have accused the government of being lenient and insincere in dealing with corruption, and have appealed to the Chief Minister and the Governor to intervene and ensure justice. They have also warned of intensifying their agitation if their demands are not met.
