A sudden storm accompanied by heavy rainfall wreaked havoc at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati on Sunday evening, resulting in a portion of the false ceiling collapsing.

Despite the dramatic incident, fortunately, no injuries were reported, according to an airport official.

The airport, reportedly managed and controlled by the Adani Group, faced significant disruptions as several flights were forced to divert their routes due to the adverse weather conditions.

Utpal Baruah, the chief airport officer, elaborated on the incident, stating, “Roof outlets in the airport got heavily overflowed due to rain and water instilled inside the terminal building. Outside the terminal building, a small portion of the false ceiling in the forecourt area collapsed due to the pressure of water and wind. There is no injury or damage.”

Videos circulating on social media depicted the intensity of the downpour and captured the moment when a section of the ceiling collapsed.

Additionally, footage showed airport staff diligently working to remove excess water from the terminal building.

Flight operations experienced a suspension of approximately 45 minutes, with six flights—operated by Indigo, Air India, and Air India Express—diverted to Agartala and Kolkata due to the adverse weather conditions, as reported.

However, Baruah assured that operations have since resumed, and all diverted flights have safely returned to Guwahati.

Furthermore, Baruah highlighted the challenges faced by airport personnel during the storm, revealing that an approach road to the facility was temporarily blocked for around 30 minutes due to the uprooting of trees.

Despite the disruptions caused by the inclement weather, the swift response of airport authorities ensured the safety and well-being of passengers and staff alike, as per reports.

As the situation gradually stabilizes, efforts are underway to mitigate any further impacts and restore normalcy at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.
