Cachar, Assam – A disputed police shooting has ignited tensions in Assam’s Cachar district, with the Hmar Students’ Association calling for an impartial investigation into the killing of three individuals. The student body claims the deceased were village volunteers, not militants as alleged by Assam police.
According to the association, the three men – Lallungawi Hmar, Lalbiekkung Hmar, and Joshua – were defending their villages against Meitei militants when they were taken into custody and later shot dead. The Assam police, however, claim that the three were militants and that weapons were recovered during the operation.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in his office X handle, also stated that the police operation in Cachar district resulted in the deaths of three militants belonging to the Hmar community. Sarma added that two AK series rifles, another rifle, and a pistol were recovered during the operation.
The Hmar Students’ Association has challenged these claims, insisting that the deceased were not militants but village volunteers protecting their community. The student body has demanded a thorough and unbiased investigation to uncover the truth behind the killings and ensure justice for the victims.
In their statement, the student body has asserted, “ The actions of the Assam Police defy all principles of justice and human rights.”
