Researchers Discover New Plant Species In Arunachal Pradesh’s Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary

Itanagar, July 18 – Researchers from the Botanical Survey of India have discovered a new plant species, Phlogacanthus sudhansusekharii, in the Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary. The species, named after Dr. Sudhansu Sekhar Dash, a scientist- F at the Botanical Survey of India for his contributions to ecological research in the Indian Himalayan region belongs to the Acanthaceae family and the Phlogacanthus genus.

This discovery highlights Arunachal’s rich natural heritage and the importance of preserving its diverse flora.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu while celebrating the discovery on his official X handle wrote “ The biodiversity of Arunachal Pradesh is wide & varied.

In addition to the findings of new flora, researchers from @bsi_moefcc have identified a new plant species, named Phlogacanthus sudhansusekharii, in the Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary.

This discovery reminds us of our rich natural heritage & our responsibility to preserve it for future generations.”
