Guwahati, Aug 2: In a move that may affect thousands of patients seeking affordable healthcare, the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has announced a significant price hike for 107 clinical tests. This is the first time in 22 years that the hospital has increased its test prices.

According to GMCH Superintendent Dr. Abhijit Sarma, the price hike was necessary to re-adjust the rates based on market prices. However, he assured that the new prices are still lower compared to private hospitals.

The price hike includes a 100% increase in registration fees and bed charges, from Rs 10 to Rs 20. Additionally, biochemistry tests will see a 20% hike, while other tests like thyroid, D-Dimer, and folate will also experience significant price increases.

The move may deter patients from seeking treatment at GMCH, which is known for providing quality healthcare services at affordable rates. The hospital attracts patients from all over Assam, with 85% of them being Ayushman card holders receiving free treatment under the PMJAY scheme.

Further price hikes are expected in the coming days, not only at GMCH but also at other government hospitals in the state. The decision has raised concerns about the impact on low-income patients seeking affordable healthcare.
