Agartala, August 02, 2024: In a decisive move to reclaim government land, the Tripura state administration has launched a robust action against encroachers occupying property near the Kailashahar Municipal Council (KMC) office in Unakoti district. This development follows a similar eviction at the Bharat Ratna Club from government land in Agartala city.
The operation began on Thursday noon, with a team of administrative officials including DCM Sanjit Kumar Debbarma, Biswajit Das and Somesh Banik supported by a large contingent of police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel. The officials aimed to clear several families who had unlawfully built homes on government property.
As the eviction process commenced, tensions soared with encroachers staging protests. One individual named Nirmal Malakar reportedly obstructed the operation and threatened DCM Biswajit Das with a sharp weapon. Despite the presence of police, witnesses claimed that officers remained passive during the altercation.
In an exclusive interview, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Pradip Sarkar confirmed, “The eviction was conducted as per legal protocols. Encroachers not only impeded the operation but also used abusive language. Nirmal Malakar assaulted DCM Biswajit Das with a weapon, while Subodh Malakar aided him. A complaint has been lodged against both individuals at the Kailashahar police station. Subodh Malakar has been apprehended, and efforts are underway to locate Nirmal Malakar.”
Chairperson of Kailashahar Municipal Council, Chopala Debroy, added, “Notices were issued for the demarcation of the KMC area, with pillars placed at the eastern part of the KMC office. The local residents resisted these actions, even uprooting the pillars and brandishing weapons. Legal action has been initiated against those who aggressively threatened the officials.”
The police continue their search for Nirmal Malakar, and the situation remains under close scrutiny.
