Itanagar, Aug 9: In an effort to enhance finger millet productivity in Tawang district, ICAR-Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan (ICAR-VPKAS) and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Tawang have been working together with farmers to introduce technological interventions.
Recent frontline demonstrations and farmer participatory seed production of high-yielding finger millet variety VL Mandua 376 have shown promising results, with farmers reporting 1.5 to 2 times higher grain yield compared to local cultivars.
Finger Millet Field Days & Farmer-Scientist Interactions were organized at Phomang and Kheleteng village, attended by 65 farmers, including 50 female farmers. The events aimed to enhance awareness about improved finger millet cultivation and showcased the benefits of VL Mandua 376, which matures almost a month earlier than local cultivars.
Scientists from ICAR-VPKAS and KVK Tawang interacted with farmers, sharing knowledge on improved production techniques, farm machinery, and seed production. The team also inspected seed production fields and emphasized the need for quality seed production and sharing with other farmers to upscale finger millet cultivation in the district.
