Imphal, Oct 24: The Naga People’s Front (NPF), a key ally of the BJP in Manipur, has expressed opposition to the proposed fencing of the India-Myanmar border in Naga-dominated areas of the state.
NPF general secretary Honreikhui Kashung stated that the party opposes fencing without correcting traditional boundaries. This comes after the Cabinet Committee on Security approved the construction of border fencing and roads along the 1,643-km international border at an estimated cost of Rs 31,000 crore.
About 10 km of fencing has already been completed near Moreh, with work underway to fence another 21 km in other areas of Manipur. The Centre has also scrapped the India-Myanmar Free Movement Regime, implemented in 2018.
The NPF welcomed the Hill Areas Committee’s resolution urging the government to conduct Autonomous District Council elections but emphasized its opposition to any proposals hindering administrative functioning.
The development comes amid ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur, which have resulted in over 220 deaths since May last year.
