The North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) in Meghalaya has rejected Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla’s proposal for an independent probe, labeling it a diversionary tactic. According to NEHUSU General Secretary Toniho S Kharsati, the students’ primary objective is now the removal of the VC, not the probe.
The students have expressed dissatisfaction with the VC’s management of the university, citing “illegal appointments” and a “total breakdown of administration”. The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has also sought Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s intervention to resolve the crisis.
The students’ union has elected new office bearers for the 2024-25 academic year, including President Sandy Sohtun, Vice President Riki Deiburom Rabon, and General Secretary Toniho S Kharsati. The union’s rejection of the probe proposal highlights the escalating tensions between the students and the university administration.
VC Prabha Shankar Shukla, an eminent scientist, took office on July 27, 2021. However, the students’ allegations of mismanagement and illegal appointments have cast a shadow over the university’s affairs. The crisis has prompted NESO to seek external intervention, underscoring the need for a swift resolution.

This is a politically motivated campaign, VC is an honest man requesting resolution from day 1. Seems like he has disrupted the status quo and questioned local level inefficiencies and irregularities that’s why all locals have come together to oust him. Till date there had been no sensible reason for removing the VC. He has ordered independent enquiries into the recruitments as well.
