One person was killed, and another injured as protests and violence continued in Manipur’s valley areas on Sunday night. Security forces opened fire to disperse a crowd in the Jiribam district, resulting in the death of a 21-year-old man, K Athouba. The incident occurred around 11 pm at Babupara.
Tensions escalated further when a mob ransacked and set ablaze furniture and property taken from the local offices of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, just 500 meters from the Jiribam police station.
The injured individual was rushed to a nearby hospital and is currently receiving treatment, though his condition remains undisclosed.
This violence comes amid heightened tensions in the district and across Manipur, where security forces have been deployed to manage unrest. A curfew remains in effect in Imphal West and East, while internet services are suspended in seven districts following the killing of six people, which has triggered fresh waves of violence in the valley.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as efforts continue to restore order in the region.
