Chief Minister N. Biren Singh chaired a pivotal meeting with ruling MLAs on Monday evening to address the escalating tensions in Manipur following the recent killing of six Meitei women and children in Jiribam. The meeting strongly condemned the killings and discussed critical measures to restore peace and stability in the state.
The MLAs demanded immediate “mass operations against Kuki militants responsible” for the November 11 incident and called for the group to be declared an “unlawful organisation” within seven days. A resolution passed during the meeting warned that if these demands were not met within the specified time frame, National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislators would decide the future course of action in consultation with the public. Legal action against those who vandalized legislators’ homes during protests was also assured.
Discussions extended to key policy decisions, including a review of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) and strengthening law and order mechanisms across the state.
However, the meeting also revealed deep fissures within the ruling NDA coalition. Of the 45 legislators, only 27 attended in person, while one participated virtually. Six MLAs were reportedly absent due to medical reasons, but 11 others, including a minister, skipped the meeting without explanation, according to government sources. Notably, Chief Minister’s cabinet colleague Y Khemchand Singh was among the absentees.
The meeting comes at a critical juncture for the Manipur government as it grapples with unrest and demands decisive action to ensure justice and restore public confidence.
