Guwahati, Assam: Five newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in Assam, who won in the recent byelections, are set to take their oath of office on Friday. The victorious candidates include three from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and one from the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).
The byelections, held for the Assembly constituencies of Dholai, Behali, Samaguri, Bongaigaon, and Sidli, followed the vacating of seats by legislators elected to the Lok Sabha. The BJP retained Dholai, Behali, and Samaguri, with Diplu Ranjan Sarmah winning Samaguri, a seat previously held by Congress. The AGP secured Bongaigaon with Diptimayee Choudhury, and the UPPL won Sidli with a margin of 37,016 votes.
Congress, which contested all five seats, did not win any. In Samaguri, Rakibul Hussain’s son, Tanzil Hussain, was defeated by the BJP. Hussain has accused the BJP of rigging the election and misusing administrative power.
The bypoll results further solidify the BJP-led coalition’s grip on power in Assam’s Assembly.
