The Manipur government has extended the suspension of mobile internet services in nine districts of the state until 5:15 pm on December 5, citing ongoing security concerns. The restrictions, which also include mobile data, VSATs, and VPN services, were initially imposed on November 16 following violent clashes in the region.
The affected districts are Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl, and Jiribam. Authorities argue that the move is necessary to prevent the spread of misinformation and inflammatory content that could exacerbate tensions.
The state has witnessed heightened unrest in recent months, with sporadic violence and communal tensions prompting stringent measures to maintain public safety. The prolonged suspension has, however, drawn criticism from some quarters for disrupting daily life and hampering communication.
Officials have reiterated their commitment to restoring normalcy while urging the public to cooperate with the imposed restrictions to avoid further unrest.
