Agartala, December 09, 2024: In a heartfelt appeal to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Tripura East, Kriti Devi Debbarman, has requested the expedited passage of the 125th Amendment of the Indian Constitution. This crucial amendment seeks to enhance the administrative and financial autonomy of the Sixth Schedule areas in Northeast India, fostering better governance and socio-economic development.

In her letter dated December 9, 2024, Debbarman expressed her “sincere support for the 125th Amendment,” emphasizing its significance in addressing the unique challenges faced by Sixth Schedule regions. Highlighting the recent meeting in Delhi, where representatives of these areas presented their concerns, she noted the formation of a three-member committee under the leadership of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, as a positive development.

“It is heartening to see the government taking proactive steps to address the demands of the Sixth Schedule district and territorial councils,” Debbarman wrote. “The establishment of this committee has brought a wave of optimism among the people in our region.”

The MP stressed the importance of legislative and financial autonomy for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). “As an elected representative of a constituency with a majority under the Sixth Schedule, I sense an urgent need for reforms to empower local governance,” she added.

Debbarman further highlighted the transformative potential of the 125th Amendment, stating that it would strengthen regional harmony through socio-economic development, cultural preservation, and enhanced self-governance. “By empowering district and territorial councils, we will take a significant step towards inclusive and balanced development in Northeast India,” she remarked.

She concluded with a plea to prioritize the amendment’s passage in Parliament. “The timely passage of this amendment will not only address the immediate needs of the Sixth Schedule areas but also reaffirm the government’s commitment to the welfare of our northeastern states. I am confident that under your leadership, we will see positive developments on this front,” the MP said.

MP Debbarman was accompanied by TIPRA Motha Party’s founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarman.

The letter highlighted the pressing need for reforms to address the aspirations of the tribal communities and ensure sustainable development in the region.
