Guwahati, Dec 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the state government plans to establish one university and one medical college in every district. This initiative aims to enhance the state’s education and healthcare infrastructure.
In a press conference, Sarma emphasized the rapid progress Assam has made, with over 80 lakh people lifted out of poverty in recent years. He credited the government’s focus on health and education as key factors behind this transformation. Sarma also highlighted the upgrading of several colleges to universities during his tenure.
Currently, 23 medical colleges are under construction in the state, with plans to build three additional colleges in Darang, Hojai, and Hailakandi districts by next year. Sarma noted that the previous Congress-led government had only three medical colleges in Assam.
The Chief Minister further stated that nearly every district in Assam now has a university either under construction or planned. Universities have already been established in districts such as Hojai, Nagon, Cachar, Bajali, and Lakhimpur, with more to follow.
Sarma also announced plans to build bridges over the Brahmaputra River in each district to improve connectivity. He expressed confidence that Assam’s development trajectory will make it one of the most developed states in India.
Additionally, the CM outlined several welfare initiatives, including financial assistance for over 78,000 microfinance borrowers, distribution of 3.23 lakh bicycles to school students, and 48,673 scooters for meritorious students. Cash awards will also be given to nearly 27,000 top-performing Class 10 students.
The state government will also allocate Rs 353.67 crore to help 6.86 lakh disaster-affected families rebuild their homes, and Rs 21.90 crore will be distributed to 6,490 Self Help Groups for establishing food processing units.
