Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Member of Parliament, Sanjay Singh, on Friday filed a suspension of business notice in the Rajya Sabha, calling for an immediate discussion on the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur. Singh raised alarm over the 19-month-long crisis, which has resulted in significant loss of life, widespread destruction, and the displacement of thousands of people in the state.
In his notice, Singh highlighted the failure of both the state and central governments in addressing the escalating violence. He criticized them for neglecting the safety of women and failing to restore law and order. Singh pointed out that hundreds of homes have been destroyed, many innocent lives have been lost, and thousands of families have been displaced since the violence erupted in May 2023.
Singh also drew attention to a horrific incident in Jiribam district on November 7, 2024, where a woman was tortured and killed, describing it as a grim reminder of the deteriorating security situation in Manipur. Despite a Supreme Court directive for the state government to report on the damages and rehabilitation plans, Singh noted that no concrete actions have been taken.
The AAP MP also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting Manipur, accusing the central government of showing indifference to the ongoing crisis. Singh further emphasized the worsening conditions in the state, citing ongoing curfews, internet shutdowns, and shortages of essential goods.
In addition to the notice on Manipur, Singh has also submitted a zero-hour notice in Parliament to discuss the farmers’ protests. The current winter session of Parliament, which began on November 25, is scheduled to continue until December 20, though it has faced repeated disruptions.
