Gangtok, Dec 14: North Sikkim has witnessed a surge in tourist arrivals, with more than 4,500 visitors, both domestic and international, flocking to the region in just one week since it reopened on December 1. The region’s picturesque snowfall and winter landscapes have attracted travelers seeking a serene getaway amidst nature’s beauty.
Tourism experts are optimistic that the influx will continue through the winter season, with key destinations such as Lachen, Lachung, and Gurudongmar Lake seeing a steady stream of tourists. This surge is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy, particularly for businesses dependent on tourism.
A key factor behind the revival is the reopening of critical infrastructure, including the North Sikkim Highway and the Toong-Naga Road. The Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS) has lauded the government’s efforts to restore these vital routes. TAAS President Sonam Norgay Lachungpa noted that the reopening of the Toong-Naga Road has greatly improved accessibility, benefiting both locals and tourists.
Additionally, the Border Roads Organization (BRO) has been working diligently to repair and upgrade road networks across the state, following the damage caused by the October 2023 GLOF disaster and the June 2024 cloudburst. As part of its Project Swastik, the BRO has completed significant repairs, including the construction of a 180-foot bailey bridge and the resurfacing of key roads such as the Kalep-Giagong stretch leading to Gurudongmar Lake, ensuring smoother travel to North Sikkim’s popular tourist destinations.
