Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has emphasized Assam’s growing significance as a regional “growth hub” following his recent visit to Bhutan. During his four-day trip, Sarma focused on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring opportunities for collaboration between Assam and Bhutan, particularly in the areas of trade, energy, and water resources.
Sarma pointed out that Assam’s invitation to Bhutan’s National Day marks the state’s increasing recognition as an emerging economic power. He addressed Assam’s growing energy needs, proposing hydropower partnerships with Bhutan, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim to meet the state’s projected demand for an additional 300 MW of power annually by 2026. The Chief Minister also discussed utilizing Bhutan’s water resources for irrigation and improving Guwahati’s water supply by diverting water from the Sankosh River.
During the visit, Sarma held key discussions with Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay, focusing on enhancing trade relations and exploring new economic opportunities. Sarma also participated in the Gelephu Mindfulness City Project presentation, highlighting Bhutan’s efforts in environmental sustainability, and invited Bhutanese leaders to the upcoming Advantage Assam 2.0 summit.
The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by Bhutan and reaffirmed Assam’s commitment to further strengthening its deep ties with Bhutan.
