Lakhimpur, Dec 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the distribution of Rs 350 crore in financial assistance to 684,487 families affected by the recent floods. The aid, part of the state’s “12 Days of Development” initiative, aims to provide immediate relief to flood-hit communities across Assam.
Speaking at a public event in Lakhimpur, CM Sarma highlighted that the financial support would help families who lost their homes and crops during the floods. The initiative, launched on December 11, seeks to reach around 12 lakh people with rapid relief within 12 days.
In addition to flood assistance, the Chief Minister announced measures to alleviate poverty, including the cancellation of microfinance loans for 16 lakh women in the state.
Sarma also unveiled key infrastructure projects for Lakhimpur, including a Rs 26-crore bridge to improve connectivity, as well as the establishment of a government law college and BSc nursing college for girls in the region.
The event saw the distribution of over 5 lakh ration cards across 37 districts, with beneficiaries set to receive 5 kg of rice for December. Ration cardholders will also be eligible for free medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh and the Orunodoy scheme to prevent fraudulent claims.
