In a bid to ensure safer travel during the upcoming Magh Bihu festival, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has unveiled a series of enhanced road safety measures. The initiative is aimed at reducing accidents and ensuring public safety throughout the festive season.

At a recent review meeting, CM Sarma attributed a decrease in road accidents to the strict enforcement of the “No Drink and Drive” policy, particularly after 10 PM in Guwahati. He assured that these measures would remain in place during the Magh Bihu festival to maintain the safety improvements.

The Chief Minister has also instructed the Excise Department to review bar timings to regulate late-night activities during the festival period.

To further improve road safety, the state government is expediting the installation of streetlights, foot overbridges, and reflective patches along the Guwahati Bypass. The Public Works Department (PWD) is also adding advanced safety features like speed breakers, crash barriers, and fluorescent signage to ongoing road infrastructure projects.

Additionally, district SPs have been assigned the task of ensuring that commercial vehicles are equipped with reflective patches for better nighttime visibility. Police and district administrations will also conduct awareness campaigns on social media to encourage public participation in road safety initiatives.

As part of the broader safety measures, commercial drivers will undergo vision testing, with corrective measures provided to those found with vision impairments, further strengthening road safety across the state.
