Agartala, December 28, 2024: The Tripura High Court recently reviewed a public interest litigation (PIL) highlighting the need for improved safety measures in schools across the state. The petitioner-in-person raised concerns over the lack of basic safety infrastructure, including CCTV cameras in many schools.
In its response, the state government submitted an additional counter-affidavit, revealing that out of 4,905 schools across eight districts, only 218 have functional CCTV cameras. The government also informed the court that safety guidelines under the New Education Policy (NEP), 2020, have been circulated to District Education Officers and school managements.
“The state is committed to enhancing safety measures in schools and has initiated a phased installation of CCTV cameras,” assured the Government Advocate. However, he clarified that privately managed schools have been issued guidelines under the NEP, and further deliberations will be held regarding their compliance with safety measures.
The Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice Biswajit Palit, has scheduled the next hearing for February 6, 2025. The court has directed the petitioner to present detailed arguments on the matter.
The Advocate General also assured the bench that the issue of school safety, including CCTV installations, will be escalated to the competent authorities for appropriate action.
The case highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive safety protocols in schools to ensure the well-being of students and staff alike.
