Guwahati, Dec 30: Assam’s ‘DJ Lockup’ campaign, aimed at curbing drunk driving, has made a comeback as part of the state police’s ‘No Regret New Year’ initiative to promote road safety during the festive season.
Launched initially in 2022, the ‘DJ Lockup’ drive encourages young partygoers to drink responsibly and avoid driving under the influence. Special Director General of Police (SDGP) Harmeet Singh explained that the campaign is designed to resonate with the youth, urging them to follow road safety rules and avoid drunk driving.
This year, the campaign also includes safety messages for driving in foggy conditions and tips for those traveling during the picnic season. “We want everyone to enjoy the holiday season, including Bihu, without accidents,” Singh added.
The initiative has gained significant traction, inspiring similar campaigns across India and internationally, including in parts of Africa and Europe. Assam Police, in collaboration with the state transport department, is distributing videos and short clips on social media to raise awareness about road safety.
The campaign creatively uses popular culture references, with memes such as ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenga Par Drunk Driver Nahi’ and ‘Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara Seatbelt Lagao’ to engage the public.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently noted that Assam is the only major state in India to see a reduction in road accident fatalities. He stressed the importance of maintaining road safety measures during the critical holiday period and revealed a 15 percent reduction in fatalities across many districts due to improved enforcement.
The return of the ‘DJ Lockup’ campaign is expected to play a key role in ensuring safer roads throughout the festive season.
