Agartala, Dec 30: A six-member team from the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Ltd has recently visited the Dumbur hydroelectric plant in Tripura’s Gomati district to assess the feasibility of its revival. The plant, commissioned in 1984, suffered extensive damage during the severe floods in September, rendering it non-functional.

The team conducted a three-day study to evaluate the condition of the plant and explore options for restoring and enhancing its power generation capacity. The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) has engaged NHPC as a consultant for the project’s revival.

Bishwajit Bose, Managing Director of TSECL, stated that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) from NHPC is awaited. The state government will decide on the plant’s future once the DPR is received.

The revival of the Dumbur hydroelectric plant is crucial for Tripura, as it will help meet the state’s Renewable Power Obligation (RPO) by generating 15 MW of power daily. The project is also economically beneficial, with a lower production cost of Rs 3.86 per unit compared to Rs 5.90 per unit for gas-based power plants in the region.
