Guwahati, Dec 31: Senior Assam Police officer Partha Sarathi Mahanta has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police for Guwahati, succeeding Diganta Barah. The reshuffle, which includes several key transfers, was announced by the Assam government on Monday.
Mahanta, a 2006-batch IPS officer, brings extensive experience in law enforcement. Prior to this, he served as the Joint Commissioner of Police in Guwahati, where he handled important areas such as crime control and intelligence. Earlier in 2024, Mahanta was promoted to the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP) from his previous position as Deputy Inspector General of Police.
As the new Commissioner, Mahanta is expected to prioritize public safety, improve crime prevention measures, and foster stronger community relations in the city.
Meanwhile, the outgoing Commissioner, Diganta Barah, has been reassigned as the Inspector General of Police (SB) Assam and will also take on the additional role of Director of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon.
Along with Mahanta’s appointment, several other senior police officers have been transferred. IPS Akhilesh Kumar Singh has been appointed as the new Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), while retaining his responsibilities as IGP (Communication) and IGP (T&AP). IPS Lachit Baruah will continue in his role as Managing Director of the Assam Police Housing Corporation Ltd. IPS Prasanta Kumar Bhuyan has been reassigned as IGP (Admin), and IPS Vivek Raj Singh will assume additional duties as IGP (T&AP) along with his current roles as IGP (MPC) and IGP (BTAD).
