Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has criticized Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s recent public apology for the state’s violent unrest, calling it “insufficient.” Gehlot also directed sharp criticism at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, holding them accountable for the deteriorating situation in Manipur.

“Manipur’s Chief Minister has apologised now, but what happened there is unforgivable,” Gehlot said, referencing the widespread violence, including incidents of rape and oppression. He questioned why both the state and central governments failed to act effectively during the crisis and why CM Biren Singh was not removed earlier, given the loss of over 250 lives.

The former Rajasthan CM accused Prime Minister Modi of neglecting Manipur and criticized him for not visiting the conflict-hit state. “If he had visited Manipur, it would have shown his magnanimity,” Gehlot remarked. He further accused PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of ignoring the state during its most critical moments.

Gehlot argued that CM Biren Singh should have resigned earlier to uphold his dignity and responsibility. He stated that the leadership’s failure to address the violence promptly and effectively has left a lasting scar on the people of Manipur.

The remarks come amidst continued debates over the handling of the unrest in Manipur and the accountability of state and central governments in restoring peace.
