The Tripura Ganamukti Parisad (GMP), the tribal wing of the CPI(M), will submit a memorandum to Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu on January 11, raising concerns over the low implementation of the MGNREGA scheme and alleged corruption within the Tribal Autonomous Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
In a press conference, GMP General Secretary Radhacharan Debbarma highlighted the party’s demands, urging the BJP-led NDA government in Delhi to prioritize the passage of the Constitution (125th Amendment) Bill, 2019. This bill aims to increase the financial and executive powers of autonomous councils in the northeastern region’s Sixth Schedule areas.
Debbarma also accused the Tipra Motha party of mismanagement in the TTAADC, citing the absence of elected village committees since 2021 as a factor contributing to corruption. He alleged that funds meant for development were being misused by Tipra Motha leaders in the absence of these committees.
The GMP further criticized the state government for a sharp decline in MGNREGA man-days, resulting in fewer job opportunities for rural residents. With three months remaining in the financial year, the state has generated only an average of 42 man-days, Debbarma noted.
The GMP has announced plans to hold an agitation on January 11 to demand the Governor’s intervention and the resolution of these issues.
