Tripura CM Dr Manik Saha Reveals Over 50,000 Pending Cases in State Courts

Agartala, January 10, 2025: Tripura’s Chief Minister Prof Dr Manik Saha, who is also the minister in-charge of Law department said that altogether, 50,268 cases are pending in courts across Tripura.

Replying to a query raised by CPIM MLA Nirmal Biswas in the assembly’s winter session here in Agartala city on Friday, CM Dr Saha stated “As of October 31, 2024, courts across Tripura have a total of 50,268 cases pending. This includes 13,108 civil cases and 37,160 criminal cases. In the High Court of Tripura: 945 cases comprising of 809 civil and 136 criminal cases are pending while the Subordinate Courts of Tripura has 49,323 cases comprising of 12,299 civil and 37,024 criminal cases.

As of November 25, 2024, a total of 429 rape cases are under trial in Tripura courts consisting of 28 cases in the High Court of Tripura and 401 cases in the Subordinate Courts, he added.

Dr Saha also said “Data reveals significant variation in the disposal of rape cases in Tripura courts over the past four years. In 2021, a total of 105 cases were disposed of, including 14 in the High Court and 91 in Subordinate Courts. The number increased in 2022, with 186 cases disposed of, comprising 14 in the High Court and 172 in Subordinate Courts. In 2023, 226 cases were resolved, with 22 in the High Court and 204 in Subordinate Courts. As of November 25, 2024, 149 cases have been disposed of, including 14 in the High Court and 135 in Subordinate Courts.”

“Regarding convictions in rape cases, 20 convictions were recorded in 2021, including 7 in the High Court and 13 in Subordinate Courts. The number rose to 27 in 2022, with 7 in the High Court and 20 in Subordinate Courts. In 2023, there were 53 convictions, with 13 in the High Court and 40 in Subordinate Courts. As of November 25, 2024, 25 convictions have been recorded, including 6 in the High Court and 19 in Subordinate Courts” he informed the house in a written reply.
