Agartala, January 15, 2025: The third day of the Tripura Legislative Assembly witnessed a compelling zero-hour discussion, where Congress MLA Birajit Sinha raised critical concerns regarding dam infrastructure in Kailashahar. Highlighting the issue of two dams—one on the Indian side and another in Bangladesh—Sinha expressed fears about the potential consequences of heavy rainfall.

“There are two dams in Kailashahar, one on the Indian side and another on the Bangladesh side. The neighboring country has already started constructing a bigger dam, which could have severe repercussions if heavy rainfall occurs in Kailashahar,” Sinha stated. He revealed that a 7-kilometer stretch of land, acquired from Rangauti Gram Panchayat to Kailashahar town, was earmarked for a dam. However, while construction on the Bangladeshi side progresses rapidly, the Indian dam—built over 40 years ago—remains in a dilapidated state without maintenance.

“I appeal to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to initiate an inquiry into the status of this dam,” Sinha urged.

Adding weight to the discussion, ARD, Fisheries, and SC Minister Sudhangshu Das, who represents the Fatikroy constituency located 24 kilometers from Kailashahar, acknowledged the gravity of the situation.

“As a representative from the same Unakoti district, I find the issue immensely relevant,” said Das. He highlighted the recurring threat of floods, noting that recent flooding was mitigated as excess water flowed into Bangladesh. “Another pressing issue is the unfenced portion of the Indo-Bangla border. This allows unauthorized entry of Bangladeshi citizens into Indian territory for cattle theft, smuggling, and other illegal activities. I urge the Chief Minister to address this matter urgently,” Das added.

Responding to the appeals, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha assured the Assembly of a proactive approach. “Both MLA Sinha and Minister Das have raised valid concerns. Earlier, we reviewed water resources, including the 12 rivers flowing through Tripura. I have visited Kailashahar and Fatikroy multiple times and have sent detailed reports with photographs to the central ministry for a permanent solution. This is an international matter, and we are committed to addressing it,” Dr. Saha affirmed.

The Chief Minister’s response was met with optimism, with the Assembly urging swift action to prevent potential disasters and ensure the safety and development of the region.
