Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has praised Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma for his strong action against illegal poppy cultivation and drug trafficking. Speaking at a program in Imphal West district on Sunday, Singh expressed his appreciation for Sarma’s leadership in addressing the growing drug menace in Assam.

“I commend Chief Minister Sarma for his active efforts in tackling drug-related issues. Both of our states must work together to protect our youth from the dangers of drugs,” Singh stated.

In a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Singh further acknowledged Sarma’s decisive measures in combating the illegal cultivation of poppy. “My deep appreciation for the decisive actions taken in Assam, under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri @himantabiswa ji, in addressing the challenges posed by poppy cultivation,” Singh wrote.

Singh emphasized the importance of both states working in unity to build a drug-free future for the youth of Northeast India.

Meanwhile, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma shared an update about the recent success of an anti-poppy operation in Goalpara district, where authorities destroyed 170 bighas (over 56 acres) of illegal poppy fields worth Rs 27 crore in January. Sarma humorously addressed the culprits behind the illicit cultivation, saying, “Dear Local Pablo Escobars, sorry to spoil your planned Udta Assam party!” He also posted a video of the operation showing a tractor demolishing the poppy fields, guarded by a strong police presence.

The collaborative efforts of the two leaders underscore their shared commitment to eliminating the drug threat and safeguarding the future of the region’s youth.
