Chief Minister N. Biren Singh inaugurated the Art and Culture building and an Open Gym at Manipur University today. He also laid the foundation stones for a 33/11 KVA Substation and a swimming pool within the university campus.
Addressing the gathering at the Manipur University Auditorium, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of fitness in today’s sedentary lifestyle. He highlighted the role of educational institutions as temples of learning, shaping future leaders and guiding society. Singh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing university-related concerns and assured that the swimming pool construction would be completed within a year.
Reflecting on past events, he recalled attending a function at the same auditorium in May 2023 alongside the Vice President of India when violence erupted in the state. He expressed his hope for peace and underscored the need for discussions among faculty, researchers, and students to better understand the ongoing conflicts. He also urged universities to conduct seminars and legal awareness camps to clarify issues related to border fencing and other public concerns.
Earlier in the day, CM Biren Singh laid the foundation stone for multi-storied government quarters at Langol Housing Complex, Imphal West. Speaking at the event, he reiterated the government’s continuous efforts since 2017 to bring balanced development to both hill and valley regions.
Despite setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic and recent conflicts, the government has continued implementing key development projects while working toward resolving ongoing issues, he noted. The new multi-storied government housing will be a G+7 structure, marking a shift towards vertical expansion to optimize land use. Similar high-rise government quarters are also under construction in New Checkon, featuring 13 buildings.
Additionally, the Chief Minister highlighted efforts to rejuvenate Lamphalpat into a recreational spot and stressed the importance of proper urban planning, cleanliness, and maintaining drainage systems. The events marked the government’s sustained commitment to infrastructure growth, education, and urban development despite prevailing challenges.
