BJP Manipur spokesperson M. Suresh today stated that the appointment of a security advisor in Manipur is clear evidence of the imposition of Article 355. Addressing the media, he launched a sharp attack on Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, criticizing his remarks in Parliament regarding the ongoing crisis in the state.
Reacting to MP Bimol’s demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to investigate the root cause of the conflict, Suresh termed the request “unfortunate” and claimed it showed a lack of understanding of the situation. He also took issue with Bimol’s statement that some militants in the valley were nurtured by political leaders, interpreting it as an attack on village volunteers. “If his statement leads to the re-imposition of AFSPA, Bimol should be held responsible,” Suresh asserted.
Accusing the Congress of political opportunism, Suresh alleged that the party was siding with the ten Kuki-Zo MLAs while blaming the Chief Minister for inaction. He pointed out that under Article 355, law and order in Manipur falls under the Centre’s jurisdiction.
MP Bimol Akoijam had earlier raised concerns in Parliament about the government’s handling of the Manipur crisis, criticizing the absence of the issue in the Presidential address. He also questioned the relevance of celebrating 75 years of the Indian Constitution when its provisions were not being fully implemented in the state.
Meanwhile, BJP Manipur Pradesh General Secretary K. Sarat blamed Congress for the current turmoil, citing its past involvement in the 2008 Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with militant groups. He questioned why the Opposition had allowed the establishment of militant camps in the Imphal Valley under the agreement and claimed that BJP could not immediately reverse its effects.
Sarat also criticized Congress for accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of ignoring Manipur while failing to acknowledge that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had not condemned the Jiribam killings. He further pointed out that when Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Manipur for discussions, Congress leaders were invited but did not attend.
The ongoing political blame game continues, with both parties holding each other accountable for inaction and alleged political opportunism amid the crisis.
