The Mizoram state election commission is set to decide on the alleged breach of model code of conduct by Chief Minister Lalduhoma ahead of the February 12 village council polls. The commission had served a show-cause notice to the chief minister after a complaint was filed by the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF).
According to MNF general secretary J Rosangpuia, Lalduhoma violated the poll code by announcing new government policies during a meeting with Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leaders in Kolasib district. A photograph of the meeting was also made viral from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), which allegedly contravened the model code of conduct provisions.
State election commissioner H. Lalthlangliana stated that the chief minister submitted an explanation on Friday, and a detailed report on the alleged violation has been submitted by the Kolasib district election officer.
The Mizoram state election commission had earlier pardoned PWD minister Vanlalhlana for violating the code after he apologized. The commission’s decision on the chief minister’s alleged breach is expected to be made on Monday.
Meanwhile, elections to 544 village councils and 111 local councils are scheduled to take place on February 12, with 6,829 candidates vying for village council seats and 2,076 aspirants for local council seats. Counting will begin at 7 pm or as soon as polling is completed on February 12.
