Guwahati, Feb 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 16 appointed Olympian and Arjuna Awardee Jayanta Talukdar as the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). The appointment letter was presented to Talukdar during a felicitation ceremony at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

CM Sarma praised Talukdar’s exceptional contributions to Indian archery, acknowledging that his recognition should have been made earlier. The Chief Minister also expressed regret over the delay in honoring Talukdar, attributing it to the actions of the previous government, and emphasized that his prime years were before 2014.

Jayanta Talukdar, born on March 2, 1986, is a decorated archer who won an individual gold medal at the 2006 Archery World Cup and a silver medal at the 2004 Junior World Championships. He made history by becoming the first Indian archer to win a gold medal at the FITA Meteksan World Cup.

His other notable achievements include a gold medal at the South Asian Games and a bronze medal in the team event at the 2006 Asian Games. Talukdar, who was ranked Number 1 in the World Cup in 2009, was awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2007 for his outstanding contributions to the sport.
