In a historic first, the Assam Legislative Assembly conducted its session outside Guwahati, with the Budget session being held in Kokrajhar, at the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) assembly, on Monday.
Ministers and MLAs from Assam were seen departing for Kokrajhar to attend the session. Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika described the move as a landmark step under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He pointed out that while the people of Kokrajhar once demanded a separate state, today they are welcoming the government’s presence in the region, which marks a shift in the political and social atmosphere.
Deputy Speaker of the Assam Assembly, Numal Momin, expressed that the session held in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) would send a positive message of peace and progress. Momin highlighted the role of the BJP government in restoring peace to the previously disturbed region, aligning it with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas.”
BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia called the event a historic day for Assam, emphasizing that the session would focus on the development of the six scheduled areas, reinforcing the government’s commitment to their growth.
AIUDF MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya praised the initiative, recognizing the transformation of the BTC area from underdevelopment and insecurity to mainstream inclusion. He said this was a clear message of the government’s dedication to the welfare of the Bodo people.
Congress MLA Abdur Rashid Mandal expressed that the historic Budget session outside Guwahati would center on the socio-economic development of the six scheduled areas, reinforcing the importance of such regions for the state’s overall progress.
AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam noted that the session in Kokrajhar signified the peaceful restoration of the BTC area, marking the end of years of unrest and the beginning of peaceful integration into the state’s mainstream.
The one-day session in Kokrajhar is a significant milestone in Assam’s history, symbolizing peace, progress, and the inclusive development of the Bodoland Territorial Region.
