Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio Inaugurates Meluri As The 17th District

Kohima, Feb 22: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio officially inaugurated Meluri as the 17th district of the state on Wednesday. The event, held in Meluri, was marked by official speeches, cultural performances, and the unveiling of a monolith to commemorate the district’s formation.

Addressing the gathering, Rio highlighted that Meluri was officially notified as a district on November 2, 2024. He acknowledged the role of the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) in facilitating the process by issuing the “No Objection Certificate” and urged continued unity between the Chakhesang and Pochury tribes, along with the larger Naga community.

Rio noted that Meluri’s administrative history dates back 67 years, with a Chairman Bench Court established in 1958. Calling Meluri the “Land of Fortunes,” he emphasized its natural and cultural significance, including Shiloi Lake, Tizu River, and the Trade Centre at Avakhung, while also highlighting its economic potential.

During the ceremony, Rio also inaugurated the Multidiscipline Sports Stadium. The event was attended by Chief Secretary J Alam, Minister for Power and Parliamentary Affairs KG Kenye, and Advisor Z Nyusietho Nyuthe, who delivered speeches on the district’s significance.

Cultural performances by the Lozaphuhu Cultural Troupe and various area public organizations were among the highlights, along with a special song presented by Atusa Katiry and the South East Nagaland District (SEND) choir.

The event, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Mhathung Tsanglao, also included prayers led by Reverend Rumatho Nyusou and Reverend Rathuvu Thuvuri.

The formation of Meluri District is seen as a significant step in Nagaland’s administrative and developmental framework, offering new opportunities for growth in the region.
