Agartala, March 12, 2025: In a shocking case of fraud, a rickshaw driver in Teliamura town under Khowai district was allegedly cheated out of ₹4.65 lakh by a woman who falsely claimed to be an SBI bank employee. The incident took place on Tuesday near the SBI Teliamura branch, just a short distance from the local police station.
The victim named Shankar Majumdar is a rickshaw puller by profession from the Maharanipur Kapalitila area, had deposited his hard-earned savings in the bank, hoping to secure a fixed deposit. However, upon visiting the bank on Tuesday to withdraw funds, he was left in shock to find only ₹9,000 remaining in his account. “My eyes were about to pop out in disbelief. This was my life’s savings,” said a devastated Shankar, pleading with the authorities to retrieve his money.
According to reports, the accused woman, the wife of a local hotel owner, had gained Shankar’s trust by posing as an SBI employee. She allegedly manipulated him into handing over his savings under the pretext of securing a fixed deposit.
Upon revealing the fraud, alert local residents helped Shankar approach the Teliamura police station. Officers swiftly arrived at the spot and, during initial interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to the crime. However, when faced with journalists, she remained silent, covering her mouth with a mask and wearing traditional attire.
The incident has sparked outrage in the locality, with many questioning the security of bank transactions and the vulnerability of daily wage earners. “It is heartbreaking to see a poor rickshaw driver being robbed of his life savings. The authorities must ensure justice is served,” said a local resident.
Now, all eyes are on the police investigation and whether the stolen money will be recovered and returned to the victim.
