Agartala, March 28, 2025: Fish farming has emerged as a crucial sector contributing to food security, nutrition, employment and income for millions, particularly in rural areas. As an affordable source of animal protein, fish plays a vital role in addressing hunger and malnutrition. Recognizing its economic potential, experts stress the need for greater focus and investment in fisheries to ensure sustainable growth.

A recent study has highlighted Tripura as the state with the highest fish consumption rate in India, where 99% of the population consumes fish. The per capita fish consumption in Tripura stands at 27.83 kg per year, making it the second-highest fish-consuming state in the country. With such a high demand, the fisheries sector remains a significant contributor to the state’s economy, Fisheries minister Sudhangshu Das told the house on Friday.

However, the supply-demand gap in the state has posed a challenge. As per official figures, Tripura’s annual fish demand is 1,17,287.46 metric tons, while production remains at 85,805.68 metric tons, resulting in a deficit of 31,481.78 metric tons. This shortfall is currently met through imports from other states and neighboring countries, he added.

To enhance fish production and achieve self-sufficiency, the Tripura government launched the Chief Minister’s Matsya Vikas Yojana in the financial year 2023-24. The scheme has significantly contributed to the development of the fisheries sector in the state. Furthermore, the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and the North Eastern Council (NEC) Project have provided additional support in strengthening the industry, Minister said.

Addressing a reference notice raised by BJP MLA Swapna Das Paul regarding the Fisheries Department’s strategy to increase fish supply, Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das responded during the sixth session of the state assembly’s budget session on Friday. The minister, in a written reply, underscored the government’s commitment to bridging the supply gap.

“The state government is dedicated to achieving self-reliance in fish production through targeted schemes and financial assistance to fish farmers. We are implementing modern aquaculture techniques and expanding infrastructure to meet the growing demand,” stated Minister Das.

Officials believe that with sustained efforts and strategic investments, Tripura can significantly reduce its dependence on fish imports, fostering economic growth and providing livelihood opportunities to thousands engaged in the sector.
