The Central government has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in parts of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland for another six months, effective April 1, 2025. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced the decision after reviewing the security situation in these states.

In Manipur, the entire state remains under AFSPA, except for areas under 13 police stations across Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching districts. The extension follows the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur since February 2025, after the resignation of N Biren Singh, amid ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023.

In Nagaland, AFSPA has been extended in Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, and Peren districts. Additionally, the Act remains in force in select police station areas of Kohima, Mokokchung, Longleng, Wokha, and Zunheboto districts.

In Arunachal Pradesh, the extension applies to Tirap, Changlang, and Longding districts, as well as areas under Namsai, Mahadevpur, and Chowkham police stations in Namsai district, which share a border with Assam.

The MHA stated that the security situation would be closely monitored, and any further extension or modification of AFSPA would be decided based on future assessments.
