Arunachal Pradesh: Historic Six-Day Trekking Programme On Freedom Trail Begins In Tawang

Itanagar, April 1: A six-day trekking programme on the Freedom Trail, retracing the historic route taken by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in 1959, commenced on March 31 from Kenzamani. The event, organized by the District Administration, Tawang, aims to commemorate the Dalai Lama’s arrival in Tawang in 1959.

The inaugural ceremony featured long-life prayers for the Dalai Lama, cultural performances, and speeches by dignitaries, including MLA Lungla Tsering Lhamu and Chairman DoKAA Jambey Wangdi. The trekking event will conclude at Pungteng, Tawang, on April 5, 2025, with 300 participants, including GBs, PRI members, jawans from border guarding forces, monks, and tourists.

The trekking programme is being coordinated by Addl. DC Lungla Tashi Dhondup and EAC Jemeithang Deewan Mara, with support from Deputy Commissioner Kanki Darang and MLA Lungla Tsering Lhamu. The event is significant, as it retraces the historic route taken by the Dalai Lama during his escape from Tibet in 1959.

The trekking route covers approximately 100 kilometers, with stops at historic sites, including Gorzam Chorten, Shakti, and Thongleng. The programme is open to all interested individuals, who can join the culmination programme at Pungteng, Tawang, on April 5, 2025.
