Jorhat, Apr 3: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated and dedicated several key infrastructure projects in Jorhat worth Rs 110.75 crore, aiming to improve urban amenities, connectivity, and administrative efficiency.

Among the major projects, Sarma inaugurated a Convention Centre at Chinnamara, constructed at Rs 19.98 crore. The facility, spread over 3,118 square meters, features a seating capacity of 120, a media conference hall, an exclusive lounge, and suite cabins, providing a modern space for public events and administrative meetings.

He also inaugurated a two-lane flyover on the North East Frontier Railway (NFR) route, connecting Jorhat Medical College to Mission Hospital. Built at Rs 78.27 crore, the 581.20-meter-long flyover is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in the area.

Additionally, Sarma inaugurated an Automated Testing Station in Jorhat, built at Rs 12.5 crore. The facility, operating under a public-private partnership model, will replace manual vehicle fitness tests with an automated process, serving Jorhat, Golaghat, and Sivasagar districts. A similar center in Biswanath, built at Rs 15.57 crore, was inaugurated earlier on March 31, 2025.

During his address, Sarma provided updates on ongoing projects in Jorhat. He stated that the Jorhat District Commissioner’s office at Chinnamara is 50% complete and will be operational by early 2026. Additionally, the Bhogdoi flyover is expected to be completed by March 2026.

He also announced a Rs 180 crore Freedom Struggle Memorial Museum at Jorhat Central Jail, recognizing its historical significance as a site linked to Assam’s independence movement.

The event was attended by Guardian Minister of Jorhat Ajanta Neog, Transport Minister Jogen Mohan, MLAs Hitendra Nath Goswami, Rupjyoti Kurmi, Bhaskarjyoti Baruah, and other dignitaries.

Later in the day, Sarma laid the foundation stone for the Co-District Commissioner’s office in Naduar, Sonitpur district, as part of efforts to improve administrative access. He announced that 96 constituencies would have Co-District offices, each with a budget of Rs 20 crore. These offices will oversee disaster management, public fund approvals, and panchayat elections.

Assam currently has 35 districts, and as part of administrative reforms, Deputy Commissioners have been redesignated as District Commissioners to enhance governance decentralization.

As part of the Assam Mala scheme, Sarma also announced the construction of a 20-km road from Itakhola to Diplonga and a Rs 7 crore bridge on the Biswanath-Panpur road, aimed at improving connectivity.

The Chief Minister later visited the memorial site of warrior Mula Gabharu, announcing a Rs 40 lakh renovation project. He also toured the 107-year-old Madhuri Aahat Mukoli Bihutoli, discussing potential plans for its preservation and development.

Several dignitaries, including MLAs Padma Hazarika, Krishna Kamal Tanti, Pramod Borthakur, and Assam State Transport Corporation Chairman Pallab Lochan Das, attended the events.
