Agartala, April 3, 2025: The Ministry of Human Resource Development has given its nod to the decision of the Executive Council of Tripura University, sealing its directives amid rising concerns over recruitment irregularities. The university administration has been on high alert following the central government’s order, which mandates the formation of a high-level investigation committee to probe allegations related to the recruitment process of various posts, including Group D.

A senior university official stated, “The central government’s directive is clear—an independent inquiry must be conducted to ensure transparency in the recruitment process. We are committed to cooperating with the investigation.”

According to sources from the Home department, a police case has already been filed regarding the recruitment process for Group D posts at Tripura Central University. Acting on this case, authorities arrested one individual and on March 22, sealed the university’s answer sheet storage room. Although the complaint initially concerned Group D recruitment, the police administration extended the action to Group C, Group B and Group A posts leading to the sealing of nearly 15,000 answer sheets. This has resulted in a complete halt in the recruitment process for approximately 68 vacancies.

The case was subsequently transferred to the Crime Branch on March 29. However, fresh concerns have emerged as the complainant, allegedly under pressure from influential political figures, withdrew the case from the police station. Protesters have gathered at the police station for the last two days, demanding the unsealing of the evaluation room.

A senior security official remarked, “This investigation must continue. The students and unemployed youth of Tripura deserve a fair and transparent hiring process. Any attempt to suppress justice will not be tolerated.”

Meanwhile, the central government is set to hold a high-level meeting in New Delhi on issues concerning new courses, recruitment processes, and pension reforms at Tripura University. Among the major decisions anticipated is the reduction of pensions for the former Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and 12 former officials and professors, who have allegedly been receiving excess financial benefits.

A ministry official confirmed, “The misuse of government funds will not be overlooked. Necessary action will be taken against those found guilty.”

In addition, a high-powered investigation committee is being constituted under the leadership of a former Supreme Court judge, a former Allahabad High Court judge, a former Delhi High Court judge, a former Chief Secretary and a former Director General of Police. The panel will examine the entire recruitment process and address concerns regarding the sealing of answer sheets.

With fresh allegations surfacing, particularly regarding financial irregularities in Group D job placements, the fate of the recruitment process remains uncertain. If the university fails to publish the results within a month, as per UGC guidelines, the entire process may face cancellation.

Security department sources confirmed that crucial documents regarding the sealed answer sheets have been forwarded to the Crime Branch. However, university authorities have yet to provide the necessary documentation to the police. Without a court order, reopening the evaluation room appears impossible.
