Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday launched a veiled attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, accusing him of making controversial remarks regarding the involvement of a single community in India’s freedom struggle. Sarma warned that Gogoi would be taught a lesson by the public for his objectionable statements.
Speaking to reporters, CM Sarma criticized Gogoi’s assertion that only one community was involved in India’s fight for independence. He also condemned Gogoi’s demand for Muslims to be allowed to hold Namaz prayers on the streets, describing it as divisive and unacceptable. “People around the world have been expressing their concerns about this comment,” Sarma remarked.
The Chief Minister also emphasized that Muslims in Assam conduct Namaz peacefully in mosques and Idgahs, without any request for street prayers. Sarma apologized to the public on behalf of Gogoi, stating, “I hope that he will be taught a lesson by the people.”
During the parliamentary debate on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, Gogoi had criticized the proposed legislation, claiming it would weaken the Constitution and target minority communities. He also highlighted the sacrifices of Muslim freedom fighters in India’s independence movement, contrasting their bravery with the actions of some political leaders who had appealed for mercy from colonial authorities.
