Internal rifts within the Assam Congress have come to the fore as Barpeta MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed resigned from the party’s District Political Affairs Committee (PAC), citing disregard for key decisions regarding the appointment of block committee presidents.

In a resignation letter to Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah, Ahmed expressed his dissatisfaction over the party leadership’s failure to implement resolutions taken during both district and state-level meetings. He alleged that despite a decision to consult local MPs and MLAs before finalizing appointments, the process was carried out unilaterally.

“As per the decision made during the District PAC meeting held on January 4, 2025, appointments were to be made in consultation with the local MLA, MP of Dhubri HPC, and the former MP of Barpeta HPC. However, this was not followed,” Ahmed wrote.

He also referred to a State PAC meeting on March 30, 2025, where the All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary and Assam PCC in-charge reportedly directed the APCC to ensure proper consultation in disputed appointments. Ahmed claimed no action was taken.

Citing repeated neglect of such decisions, the legislator urged the APCC president to accept his resignation from the committee.

The development highlights growing factionalism within the Assam Congress ahead of the upcoming elections.
