Guwahati, Apr 8: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the Jorhat-Dibrugarh section of the National Highway is expected to be completed by December 31, 2025. This statement comes after a meeting with Krishnan Kumar, the Managing Director of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), in Delhi on April 7.
The CM expressed confidence in meeting the deadline, stating in a post on social media that there is “unanimous confidence” in finishing the highway section on time. He highlighted that the completion of the project would fulfill a key promise ahead of the upcoming elections.
The four-lane highway project, which spans from Kaliabor to Numaligarh, is around 95% complete, with only a few sections remaining to be finished, including parts that pass through Kaziranga National Park.
During the meeting, Sarma and Dr. Kumar also discussed other ongoing infrastructure projects in Assam, such as the Rs 25,000 crore Guwahati-Silchar Expressway, the Numaligarh-Gohpur underwater tunnel, and the expansion of National Highways from Baihata Chariali to Tezpur. The Chief Minister requested NHIDCL to expedite the construction of the 19.28 km-long four-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra River, which will connect Dhubri in Assam to Phulbari in Meghalaya.
In related news, the CM also met with Rajat Kumar Mishra, Secretary of the Department of Fertilizers, to discuss the establishment of a new fertilizer plant in Namrup.
Earlier, in February 2024, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari sanctioned Rs 382.10 crore for the construction of a 2-lane highway connecting Majuli and Jorhat, which will include a flyover and service roads spanning 20.5 kilometers.
