Agartala, April 09, 2025: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned a $85.4 million loan to support the development of industrial infrastructure in Tripura, aiming to boost the state’s manufacturing competitiveness, generate employment, and enhance its integration into regional and global value chains.

The funding will go towards the Tripura Industrial Infrastructure Development Project, which builds upon ADB’s prior initiatives in India, particularly in economic and industrial corridor development.

According to an official ADB statement, the loan follows a project readiness financing initiative previously extended to the Tripura government, which helped prepare a blueprint for developing integrated, inclusive, and sustainable infrastructure across nine industrial estates. The multilateral lender also provided technical assistance to support a revamped industrial policy to foster a more business-friendly environment.

“Tripura’s limited infrastructure has been a barrier to attracting private sector investment and accelerating industrialization,” said Sameer Khatiwada, ADB Senior Public Sector Economist. “This project will help bridge that gap by upgrading key utilities and transport facilities, while also strengthening institutional frameworks.”

Planned infrastructure improvements include the construction of climate-resilient roads, stormwater drainage systems, culverts, and rainwater harvesting mechanisms. The estates will also benefit from energy-efficient power distribution networks, solar power installations, upgraded street lighting, fire stations, security infrastructure, and enhanced sanitation facilities.

To support sustainable mobility, the project will introduce compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles, alongside the establishment of EV charging stations within the industrial zones.

ADB also emphasized the project’s gender-inclusive approach. Employment and training opportunities will be created specifically for women, including roles in facility management. Each industrial estate will allocate at least 300 square meters of land for women-led businesses, and will be equipped with daycare centers and gender desks to support female workers.

The initiative is expected to significantly improve the ease of doing business in Tripura and catalyze long-term industrial growth in the state.
