Agartala, April 9, 2025: Tensions erupted in front of the Tripura’s Bishalgarh police station in Sepahijala district on Wednesday afternoon after the family of Rozina Akhter, a housewife allegedly assaulted by a police constable staged a protest demanding the arrest and punishment of the accused Sabbir Hossain.

According to locals, the incident took place on Tuesday last in the Ghanimara Panchayat Tilla area. Over a domestic dispute, constable Sabbir Hossain and his wife allegedly dragged their neighbor Rozina Akhter out of her house, threw her to the ground and brutally beat her with a stick. “My sister was mercilessly assaulted. Instead of protecting citizens, this policeman used his power to harm,” said a family member of Rozina.

Rozina was initially taken to Bishalgarh Subdivisional Hospital and later referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala due to the severity of her injuries.

The police registered a case (No. 28/2025 BLG) against the accused at the Bishalgarh police station. Though Hossain was brought in for questioning, he was released on bail later that night, sparking outrage among the victim’s family.

Upon hearing of his release, Rozina’s relatives rushed from the GBP Hospital and surrounded the police station, accusing the police of accepting a bribe to secure Hossain’s release. “The accused was let go in exchange for money. Where is the justice for my daughter?” cried Rozina’s mother during the protest.

The situation intensified when Rozina, still unwell, fainted at the protest site and had to be taken back to the hospital by fire department personnel. As anger mounted, Officer-in-Charge Sanjit Sen arrived at the scene and attempted to calm the crowd by assuring a thorough investigation.

“We are taking this matter seriously. The case is under investigation, and action will be taken as per law,” said OC Sen.
