Guwahati, Apr 17: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, in collaboration with HDFC Parivartan, has launched a series of technology-driven rural development projects in Assam and Meghalaya. The initiative aims to improve food and energy security, boost farmers’ incomes, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
The projects are being implemented through the School of Agro and Rural Technology at IIT Guwahati under the programme titled Focused Development Program: Enhancing Agriculture & Residue-Based Enterprises via Community Organisations. It includes three major interventions along with infrastructure development and community mobilisation efforts.
In Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district, a biomass pellet production unit has been established in Umnowe Village in partnership with the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya. The facility converts agricultural and local biomass into pellets, providing an alternative to traditional fuels like wood and coal, while creating a new income source for farmers.
In Assam’s Hailakandi district, an agrivoltaics farming and solar-powered tea processing unit has been set up. A 50-kilowatt solar plant supports the cultivation of medicinal herbs and powers a tea blending and processing unit operated by a Farmers Producer Company with over 1,000 members.
Additionally, a freeze-drying and herbal processing facility has been installed at IIT Guwahati. The facility uses advanced technology to enhance the shelf life and market value of fruits, herbs, and other agricultural products while preserving their nutritional content.
The initiative also promotes the formation of Self-Help Groups and cooperative societies. Over 500 individuals have participated in training workshops on biomass collection, herbal processing, and value-added product development. An exposure visit for over 40 farmers from Hailakandi district was organised in collaboration with the Assam Energy Development Agency, including hands-on training and field visits in Kamrup and Nagaon districts.
Dr. Siddhartha Singha, Project Coordinator at IIT Guwahati, stated that the projects align with multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, including those related to food security, clean energy, and economic growth.
Vikash Kumar, Assistant Vice President at HDFC Bank, said the initiatives offer a scalable and replicable model for rural development. Prof. Sudip Mitra, Head of the School of Agro and Rural Technology, highlighted the potential of the projects to contribute to environmental, economic, and social sustainability across rural areas.
