Agartala, April 17, 2025: Amid rising political tensions in Tripura over the demand for the Roman script, Congress MLA and former minister Sudip Roy Barman launched a scathing attack on both Tipra Motha and the BJP during a press conference held at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan in Agartala city on Thursday.
Calling the ongoing movement for the Roman script a “scripted drama,” Roy Barman alleged that tribal sentiments were being exploited. “The emotions and sentiments of the Tipra community are being played with. They are being fooled,” he said, accusing various tribal student organizations and Tipra Motha of misleading the people.
He didn’t spare the previous government either, stating, “The Left government in the past made excuses on the issue, and now the BJP is doing dirty politics over it.”
Roy Barman also took a sharp dig at Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarman, remarking, “The people of Tipra loved him like a blind man. But capitalizing on this, the BJP and Tipra Matha have committed a ‘maha thakai’ together. And the Tipra community is being cheated by these two great thakais.”
Emphasizing the importance of democratic means, he said, “Rights cannot be achieved by staging such dramatic movements. If there is really faith in the Roman script, then the movement should be launched through democratic means. Tipra Motha and other political parties that support this demand can jointly carry out a democratic movement.”
Reaffirming his party’s stance, Roy Barman added, “The Congress has always been, is, and will always be by their side to protect their just demands and rights.” He stressed that whether or not the Congress gains politically, it would continue to raise its voice in favor of the Tipra and tribal communities.
