Shillong, Apr 18: The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills has announced a ban on illegal fishing practices in the Umiam River, specifically within the Umlyngka village boundary, extending from Sdad Wah Umkhrah to Sdad Jlu.

The ban, enforced under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), prohibits the use of toxic substances such as bleaching powder, ammonium sulfate, pesticides, and dynamite. Additionally, it restricts the use of unregulated fishing nets and other destructive tools that pose a threat to the river’s aquatic life.

This decision comes in response to reports of harmful fishing practices, which have led to significant ecological damage and the endangerment of aquatic species in the river.

Authorities have warned that violators will face legal consequences under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The ban aims to preserve the river’s biodiversity and ensure sustainable resource management for future generations. It is effective immediately and will remain in force until further notice.
